Telling whether your INFJ or INTJ can be tough. I should know! I spent a few months working this out myself when I first got started over a decade ago.

I was typed as an INTJ, but it didn’t seem to fit. I went through great lengths to understand the difference between the two types so I could feel a sense of certainty and so I could explain myself. Here are some of the insights I came back with:

#1) INTJs are more bottom-line thinkers while INFJs are more holistic thinkers

INTJs want to get to the point. If they’re going to put effort into something they typically want to know why. They tend to reverse-engineer their actions from desired outcomes.

INFJs come from a perspective that sweats the details. They’ll more often see everything as being interconnected and therefore, important. This being the case, INFJs are far more likely to get caught up in the weeds, obsessing over things that may not be mission-critical.

#2) INTJs are more often business first INFJs are people first

INTJs want to get to the point. If they’re going to put effort into something they typically want to know why. They tend to reverse-engineer their actions from desired outcomes.

INFJs come from a perspective that sweats the details. They’ll more often see everything as being interconnected and therefore, important. This being the case, INFJs are far more likely to get caught up in the weeds, obsessing over things that may not be mission-critical.

#3) INTJs are more likely to be blunt by nature while INFJs are more likely to be cruel

#4) INTJs are less comfortable showing emotion while INFJs are less comfortable hurting people’s feelings

#5) INTJs want people to be more rational while INFJs want people to be more empathetic
